Citizens Benefit from NACo Membership

The Cass County Commission received new data from NACo (National Association of Counties) that citizens are benefiting from the NACo Prescription Discount Drug Card program.

Cass County Citizens using the NACO Prescription Discount Drug Card have saved $102,863 since November 2008. Associate Commissioner Brian Baker is pleased with the stats.

There will be a protest tomorrow (8/12) in Jefferson City at Ike Skelton’s office. The MO chapter of Americans for Prosperity says they are sponsoring the event to protest Skelton’s decision to avoid town hall meetings.

Update on swine flu

The Belton School District learned yesterday, Tuesday, May 19, of a confirmed case of the H1N1 virus (Swine Flu) in our region of Cass County.

The Cass County Health Department reported through a press release that the 15-19 year-old individual has received appropriate medical care and is not considered contagious. We continue to work closely with the health department and other health organizations and are following their advice.

The Cass County Health Department announced today that a northern Cass County resident has been confirmed by the Missouri State Public Health Laboratory to be infected with the 2009 H1N1 flu.

Molendorp accuses Nixon aide of trying to buy vote

State Rep. Chris Molendorp (R- Belton) says Nixon’s deputy chief of staff Dustin Allison offered to assist in a “future career change” if he would vote for the Budget Bill that would fund health care expansion on Wednesday.

Molendorp and Anne Zerr (R - St. Charles) claim they were contacted by Allison an hour and 15 minutes before the vote, saying Gov. Nixon (D) would look “favorably” on them if they “shared his vision” on this Bill.

What is novel H1N1 flu?
H1N1 (referred to as “swine flu” early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in April 2009 in the United States. Other countries, including Mexico and Canada, have reported people sick with this new virus. This virus is spreading from person to person, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread.

Cass County Health Department is taking significant steps to deal with a new strain of swine flu, also known as the H1N1 virus, which has prompted federal officials to declare a nationwide health emergency. Missouri received confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control on May 1 that a woman in Platte County who recently traveled to Mexico had tested positive for the swine flu.

Expanding Health Care Coverage Responsibly

As the costs of health care coverage have spiraled out of control, not surprisingly the number of uninsured Missourians has risen sharply. Some estimates indicate that as many as one-third of Missouri’s citizens do not have health insurance, with a high percentage of the uninsured being working families. This is simply unacceptable. We must take measures to get hard-working Missourians affordable health care. However, the measures we take must be fiscally responsible and honor our commitment to spend taxpayer dollars wisely.
