County Commission Had a Busy Week

The Cass County Commission continues to make pro-active decisions in the final months of 2009. This week’s meeting was full of activity.

One of the first items on this week’s agenda was to address a bridge issue with 315th Street. Commissioner Bill Cook made a motion to approve and authorize Presiding Commissioner Mallory to sign construction engineering agreement with Cook, Flatt & Strobel for 315th street bridge project.

County Lowers Collection Fee

Cass County Collector Pam Shipley reviewed the city contracts and made a move to help save them some funds. “After a thorough review of contracts to handle collection of annual taxes of your city, I have come to the conclusion that a minimal reduction in the collection fee would be appropriate,” stated Shipley. “Realizing that all governmental entities are experiencing reduction in revenues, I feel any reduction would be helpful.”

Harrisonville Supports Marketplace Bonds

Last month, the Harrisonville Board of Aldermen voted down an ordinance that would have backed bonds for the Harrisonville Marketplace Redevelopment Plan. This month they changed course and approved the plan.

State of the County Address

Yesterday (9/18) the Cass County Commission gave a State of the County address during the Harrisonville Chamber of Commerce Luncheon at the Butcher Block Restaraunt.

The commission spoke of energy independence, grants it has received, the airport and ways to entice businesses to bring jobs to the area. “This is about making Cass County ready and attractive to businesses” said South Commissioner Bill Cook.

Skelton: County to Receive Federal Grant

Washington, DC - Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Missouri) announced that the U.S. Department of Justice will release more than $10,000 to Cass County to underwrite a business plan that will outline necessary steps to update the current law enforcement communications infrastructure.  The grant will be distributed through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Program (Byrne-JAG).

Belton to Vote on Park Board Status

On Nov. 3 Belton residents will decide if the Park Board will answer to the City Council or remain an independent entity.

If voters approve Bill 2009-59, the Park Board will become an administrative board answering directly to the City Council, needing approval before making decisions.
