45 Missourians Charged with Unemployment Fraud

An ongoing investigation by the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations has resulted in guilty pleas from 45 individuals for fraudulent receipt of Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits from the state. The individuals were charged with stealing by deceit and have been ordered to pay over $207,000 in restitution.

Two people from Jackson County and one from Cass County are among the 45 entering guilty pleas.

A local man was arrested after a raid on his house revealed thousands of dollars worth of fishing equipment believed to be stolen from fishing tournaments at Missouri lakes this year.

Koster Applauds Decision on Pledge of Allegiance

Former Cass County Prosecuting Attorney and current Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster says the decision protects citizens’ rights to express patriotism.

Last week, Judge Bernhardt Drumm, Jr. dismissed a lawsuit from Robert Stamm Sr. and Robert Stamm Jr. in which the men claimed Judge Kenneth Pratt violated their First Amendment rights by “coercing” them into reciting the Pledge. Upon entering the courtroom, it was typical of Judge Pratt to invite those present to remain standing for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Apparently this is the state’s way of saying “we’re sorry for taking all your tax dollars the rest of the year”. Registration numbers from the November 2008 election show that more than a dozen counties in Missouri have more registered voters than the Census shows they have voting-age residents. Clearly, the state isn’t keeping its lists current.

State Capitol roof in need of repair

The project is to begin June 11 and take about five months. The cost to the state is about $2.1 million, roughly $1 million less than expected. Cannon Construction Company of Troy, MO won the contract to do the roof work and crews will also brace a concrete wall around the roof to withstand earthquakes.

Koster cracks down on fraudulent charities

May 20 - MO Attorney General Chris Koster (former Cass County prosecutor) went to Washington, D.C. to declare “Operation Broken Charity” in Missouri, meaning he will join the nationwide “sweep” to go after fraudulent fundraisers claiming to help police, firefighters and veterans.
