It Must be Primary Season

Posted By J.T. on October 14, 2009

election-2010For political junkies in Cass County, things are finally starting to heat up in the 4th District race.  Republican candidates Vicky Hartzler and Bill Stouffer have begun attacking each other and Democrat incumbent Ike Skelton.

On October 2 Hartzler sent out a press release berating Stouffer and Skelton for supporting higher taxes.  “With great personal respect, I strongly disagree with both gentlemen.  Taxes are too high, not too low.”  She was referring to Skelton’s YES vote on the “carbon tax” and Stouffer’s previous attempt to raise the state sales tax by 1%.

The Stouffer campaign clearly was not happy. “Rather than focusing on Ike Skelton’s vote for cap and trade or his voting in support of Speaker Pelosi’s liberal agenda a staggering 95% of the time, Vicky Hartzler chose to attack Bill Stouffer.  She simply echoed the same lines of attack used by national Democrats last week following Bill’s campaign kick-off.” wrote Jackson County captain Aaron McMullen.

Stouffer’s Cass County captain Clay Kohler thought Hartzler broke Ronald Reagan’s 11th Commandment.  “At this point in time we should be doing everything in our power to show the voters of Missouri’s 4th District how liberal Ike Skelton has become — not try and denigrate a fellow conservative.”

On October 8 Hartzler said Skelton was “out of touch” with Missourians.  Hartzler was upset that Skelton said in a press release “One year later, there are signs of progress in the economy and money authorized under the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program is being repaid to American taxpayers.”

“Between January and August of this year, 42,000 men and women in Missouri were handed pink slips and sent to the jobless line.  This terrible tragedy grows worse every day.  Everybody here knows this.  Ike Skelton doesn’t know it.  His statement advertised ’signs of progress’ on the economy, and spared only a few words in passing for the job losses that are devastating families all over the 4th District and Missouri,” Hartzler said.

Stouffer also was unhappy with Skelton’s involvement with the recent Defense Funding Bill.  After accusing Skelton of  trying to “advance the homosexual agenda” by supporting the attachment of a hate crime bill to a defense authorization measure, Stouffer said “Congressman Skelton needs to remember that he represents the good conservative folks of Missouri’s Fourth District, not Nancy Pelosi or the radical Left.”

Stouffer’s campain was quick to forward an article in the Washington Times about Skelton swearing at Rep. Todd Akin to political reporters around the state.  Skelton has said he would apologize if Akin was offended by the comment.

  1. I Voted says:

A vote for Ike is a vote for Nancy Pelosi. 88% of the time he has done it her way, voted as told. Let SanFran elect their Anancy, we need to vote in someone who will support us at home.
