County Lowers Collection Fee

The Cass County Collector and the Cass County Commission have been tracking revenues for the county. However, they have also been listening to the local cities of Cass County as the state economy and national economy seeks to find new footing.
Currently, the Cass County Collector contracts with the cities of Cass County to perform their tax collections. This is a service that helps the cities and provides a one-stop service for citizens.
While cities can collect their own taxes, citizens would be required to get tax receipts from various jurisdictions to do things like license vehicles. By using the County Collector, it creates a one-stop service for citizens.
Cass County Collector Pam Shipley reviewed the city contracts and made a move to help save them some funds. “After a thorough review of contracts to handle collection of annual taxes of your city, I have come to the conclusion that a minimal reduction in the collection fee would be appropriate,” stated Shipley. “Realizing that all governmental entities are experiencing reduction in revenues, I feel any reduction would be helpful.”
“I have met with the County Commission and requested the collection fee be reduced from 4% to 3.5%, effective, November 1, 2009. The commission is in agreement with this reduction and also concurs with my suggestion that a future review would be appropriate to determine if a further reduction would be warranted,” stated Shipley.
The Cass County Commission voted to accept the recommendation. “We are working to build unity and partnerships in Cass County,” stated Associate Commissioner Brian Baker. “We understand what each of our local city governments is facing…and we are partnering with them in moving Cass County forward. We are glad to give them any help we can.”
