County Upgrades CodeRED Warning System

Posted By J.T. on September 26, 2009

square2Cass County and CodeRED announce an enhancement to the weather warning system.  Subscribers are now able to choose which weather warning they wish to receive.  Currently CodeRED offers three types of weather notifications Tornado, Flash Flood, and Severe Weather warnings.  Original subscribers were automatically signed up for all three.  Now a subscriber may choose which of the three warnings they prefer.  Those that have already registered and want to change the warnings they receive must re-register either on line at www.casscounty.com/911/911.html  or by calling the 9-1-1 Administration Office at 816-380-8223 or 816-380-8224.

“Our focus is to use technology to inform citizens of possible hazards that may impact their homes and communities,” stated Commissioner Brian Baker. “This helps families and helps first-responders…we believe this new enhancement to CodeRED will help our citizens.”

CodeRED alerts citizens about environmental or manmade disasters, search and rescue operations, and major crime incidents in your immediate area.  Citizens are notified of these emergencies through a recorded message on their landline or wireless phone.  These messages will only be sent by an authorized 9-1-1 Dispatcher.  Weather Warnings will be sent by the National Weather Service.  The CodeRED alerts and Weather Warning are a free service provided by Cass County 9-1-1.

There will be a countywide test of the Emergency Notification System on November 4, 2009.  A test message will be sent to every telephone number in the 9-1-1 system and those citizens that have registered their cell phones. “Citizens should be aware that if they only have a cell phone and do not have a landline phone they will not be notified of these emergencies unless they register,” stated Commissioner Brian Baker.
