KCP&L Raising Rates Today
Posted By J.T. on September 1, 2009
If you are a customer of KCP&L, then you will probably notice a 16%-19% increase in your electric bill starting today (9/1).
On June 10, the Missouri Public Service Commission approved a rate increase that will increase revenue by around 95 million dollars. Customers apparently should be thankful that it’s not the 101.5 million dollar increase that KCP&L originally hoped for. For a typical residential customer, the PSC staff estimates the increase will be approximately $154 a year or approximately $12.82 a month (16.1%).
KCP&L serves approximately 271,000 electric customers in 13 western Missouri counties.
From a Public Service Commission press release:
“This is the third rate increase associated with a 2005 agreement (another rate increase is likely on the way. - J.T.) which established an experimental regulatory plan which details the supply, delivery and pricing of electric service to be provided by KCP&L into the future. The experimental regulatory plan includes environmental upgrades to a number of KCP&L’s existing power plants, wind generation, construction of a new coal-fired power plant (Iatan 2) and various customer programs designed to conserve energy.”
It should be noted that 85% of electricity for Missouri comes from coal.
“Demand for electric power has increased for both residential and commercial customers. At the same time, costs of environmental controls and generating fuel continue to rise. Our plan addresses both the rising demand (through building new generation) as well as providing for greater control and certainty through needed investments for the future.”
If you are unhappy with the increase, THESE are the people responsible for approving the rate hike.
