71 NB Traffic to Switch over Saturday

MoDOT projects in Cass County

Cold milling and one-inch asphalt overlay operations of 52 miles of state highways in rural Cass County will begin in late September. Here is the list of projects to be done by Lake Asphalt Paving and Construction, LLC, and their proposed schedule, barring any weather delays:

Route 2 Bridge Re-opens

The Route 2 Bridge over the Grand River east of Freeman in Cass County re-opened today. The bridge is the fourth this year to be completed in Cass County.

Belton to Vote on Park Board Status

On Nov. 3 Belton residents will decide if the Park Board will answer to the City Council or remain an independent entity.

If voters approve Bill 2009-59, the Park Board will become an administrative board answering directly to the City Council, needing approval before making decisions.

Pleasant Hill Approves Enterprise Zone

Last week the Pleasant Hill Council passed Bill no. 09-13, supporting an Enhanced Enterprise Zone (EEZ) and establishing the Board for northeastern Cass County.

EEZs provide tax credits to help develop new and expanding businesses. Tax credits may be provided each year for up to ten years if the business creates a certain number of jobs and spends enough money on “new investment”.

Harrisonville sets levy, says no to bonds

After meeting for 2 days last week, the Harrisonville Board of Alderman said no to bonds for the financing of the Harrisonville Market Place (HMP) Redevelopment Project. The HMP is a 41 million dollar development at the intersection of 2 Highway and Commercial Street that includes Price Chopper, CVS, Burger King and Phillips 66 (this district has already self-imposed a 1% sales tax).

Peculiar Sets Levy, Tax Increases to be on Ballot

The Peculiar Board of Alderman voted last week to adopt a tax levy of $.6231 for every $100 assessed property value. This means that a home valued at $100,000 will require $623.10 in property taxes. This will go into effect October 1.

Skelton Meets with County Officials

Gary Mallory, Presiding Commissioner of Cass County, recently contacted Congressman Ike Skelton and expressed concerns about the unfunded FCC mandate to update all emergency responder radio systems. The County Commission also expressed concern about a Congressional sub-committee that tucked $160 million into the defense budget for new radio-communications for the Mexican police. The Congressman’s office immediately did research and discovered what the sub-committee had done. Soon after, the Congressman agreed to come to Cass County and discuss the issue.
