Michael S. Adams, Jr. has been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of his longtime girlfriend Amber Hartwig.
Adams, Jr., 37, allegedly shot Hartwig, 36, in the head with a .45 caliber handgun and then sustained a self-inflicted wound Tuesday evening at the couple’s home in Belton. The couple got into an argument earlier in the evening. According to their daughter, Adams, Jr. tried to jump out of the car on the way home from a trip to the grocery store.
Once the family arrived home the children were told to pack and call a friend so Hartwig and the 2 kids could stay away from Adams, Jr. for the night. While upstairs the children heard 2 gunshots. Upon arriving in the kitchen the daughter saw her mother lying on the floor and her father sitting down, smoking a cigarette.
According to the Complaint filed in Cass County the officers
“observed the victim to be deceased and the defendant to be breathing, an ambulance was called and the defendant was transported to the hospital.
While en-route to the hospital the defendant kept saying he was shot and that Amber is not dead and he wanted to die. The defendant suffered a superficial wound to the chest and was hospitalized for observation.”
A fund has been set up for the two children, aged 18 and 10. Donations may be sent to the Amber Hartwig Memorial Fund, Bank of Belton, 204 Main St., Belton, MO 64012.
