From the Pleasant Hill Times:
Pleasant Hill firefighters cool down an electrical fire (left) that broke out aboard a westbound Amtrak passenger train shortly before 1 p.m. last Monday. The Amtrak crew detected an electrical problem on the train and discovered smoke and flames pouring from underneath the rear passenger car. Although there was no smoke or fire inside the car, the Amtrak crew moved passengers into the two front cars, stopped the train in downtown Pleasant Hill and called firefighters. Pleasant Hill Fire Chief Mark Finocchio said it appeared as if a battery located underneath the rear passenger car shorted out and caught fire. Pleasant Hill firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and send the train on its way to Kansas City. The fire chief said there were reportedly no passengers or crew members injured in the fire. Ironically, Pleasant Hill firefighters had practiced putting out a fire in an Amtrak passenger train in a training exercise a couple of weeks before. (Times photo by Kirk Powell)
