Skelton: Bill will address major problem

“Cost overruns will hopefully be a thing of the past”, says U.S. Representative Ike Skelton (D-MO). He’s referring to the Weapons System Acquisition Reform Act of 2009 which President Obama recently signed.
Skelton, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, says this will save money and improve the way we acquire new systems. In addition to eliminating waste the Bill will address the issue of weapons systems not coming in on time, which Skelton says has “been a major problem.” It has been determined that in 2009 the Department of Defense had $296,000,000,000 (yes, 296 billion) in cost overruns on 96 major weapons systems.
Skelton also mentions in an interview (listen here) that the Bill will create a director of independent cost assessment to oversee defense contracts and is mostly focused on major weapons systems.
The Bill passed both Chambers of Congress unanimously.
