from the Belton School District -
The Belton School District learned yesterday, Tuesday, May 19, of a confirmed case of the H1N1 virus (Swine Flu) in our region of Cass County.
The Cass County Health Department reported through a press release that the 15-19 year-old individual has received appropriate medical care and is not considered contagious. We continue to work closely with the health department and other health organizations and are following their advice.
Here are some important facts to remember to keep yourself and your family safe.
The first few days are when the virus is most contagious. During this time we encourage you to be vigilant in watching your child for signs and symptoms of the flu. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Swine Flu symptoms are like those of any other flu strain: fever, muscle aches, fatigue and coughing; they may also include vomiting and diarrhea.
According to county, state, and federal health officials, the Swine Flu is no more severe than regular flu outbreaks, and it is important to take precautions and follow the CDC guidelines to ensure a safe and healthy home and school environment.
Also according to the CDC, school and child care program closure is not advised for a suspected or confirmed case of H1N1 and, in general, is not advised unless there is a magnitude of faculty or student absenteeism that interferes with the school or child care program’s ability to function.
Symptoms of swine flu include a fever of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, body aches, coughing, a sore throat, respiratory congestion, and in some cases, vomiting and diarrhea.
