Armed with supporting results from academic studies, an organized publicity committee and a challenge to the assessment figures provided by Cass County Assessor Bob Huston, Harrisonville R-9 School District representatives have shifted into high gear promoting the 55-cent tax levy increase earmarked to build a new $14.5 million Early Childhood Center.

To that end, R-9 superintendant Doug Van Zyl, director of communications and community relations Jill Filer and the support group, “Building for the Future,” are going full bore generating publicity and taking on anyone who says the timing for such a project is wrong or it is little more than a cloaked, taxpayer-funded exercise in entitlements.

County recorder warns of deed scam

Cass County Recorder Sandy Gregory is warning Cass County residents of unscrupulous mail solicitations that County Residents may be receiving from a company transacting business as National Deed Service, Inc. located in Northbrook, Illinois.

The Company is sending official looking letters to homeowners offering to provide them with a certified copy of their deed charging $59.95. Gregory’s office has begun receiving calls from concerned residents inquiring about the official looking letters.

Cook: “I had to vote for the salary increase”

South County Commissioner Bill Cook (R) ran on a platform of “sound and responsible” government. At a candidate forum in Freeman last fall Mr. Cook made a promise that he would not accept any pay increase as a commissioner. On January 8 of this year the Commission unanimously approved a salary structure that included a 3% pay raise.

Small fire aboard passenger train

Pleasant Hill firefighters cool down an electrical fire (above) that broke out aboard a westbound Amtrak passenger train shortly before 1 p.m. last Monday. The Amtrak crew detected an electrical problem on the train and discovered smoke and flames pouring from underneath the rear passenger car.

Sheriff to conduct “Operation Clean Slate”

From the sheriff’s office: Cass County Missouri Sheriff Dwight Diehl in cooperation with Cass County Associate Circuit Court Judge William Collins and Cass County Prosecuting Attorney Teresa Hensley, in an attempt to reduce the number of outstanding criminal arrest warrants currently being held by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, will conduct “Operation Clean Slate.”

This multi-agency coordination will be held between June 7 and June 13, 2009 and will allow any individual presently being sought on a misdemeanor warrant through Cass County Missouri, to turn themselves into the Sheriff’s Office. Subjects will be given a court date to dispose of their case and be released on their own recognizance without posting a bond.

Although this benefit has been around since 1951, it is very rarely utilized because people simply do not know what is required for them to apply and qualify.

The Cass County Commission has received “Highway Construction Guides” for 2009. MoDOT is investing in several projects throughout the county. The County Commission continues to work with MoDOT to identify maintenance, repair, and new construction needs in the county.

Presiding Commissioner Gary Mallory noted that MoDOT has been working very hard to address the needs of the county and cities within Cass. “Their door is open. Cass County has been participating in monthly meetings with MoDOT to keep them informed of needs and work with them on current projects,” stated Mallory.

The Cass County Commission has also begun implementation of several of the recommendations made by the Cass County Road & Bridge Task Force. The Commission recently hired Bob White as the new Road & Bridge Quality Assurance (QA) Supervisor. He will answer directly to the commission and work to insure that the county develops a quality road system.

Skelton: Bill will address major problem

Skelton, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, says this will save money and improve the way we acquire new systems. In addition to eliminating waste the Bill will address the issue of weapons systems not coming in on time, which Skelton says has “been a major problem.” It has been determined that in 2009 the Department of Defense had $296,000,000,000 (yes, 296 billion) in cost overruns on 96 major weapons systems.

Traffic nightmare to drag on longer

Work to reconstruct the U.S. 71 interchange at 163rd Street will be delayed at least a month after the contractor encountered unanticipated problems with the underlying rock where key bridge foundations must go, the Missouri Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.
