From the Pleasant Hill Times -
Civil War re-enactors with the 10th Missouri Light Artillery of Garden City (above) fire a salute at dedication ceremonies held over the weekend for a new “Burnt District” memorial on the grounds of the Cass County Justice Center in Harrisonville. The memorial commemorates the hundreds of women, children and other civilians living on the Missouri-Kansas border who suffered and lost so much as a result of General Thomas Ewing’s infamous Order #11. issued on August 25, 1863 in response to southern guerrila leader William Quantill’s raid on Lawrence, Kans. Families living on the Missouri-Kansas border were given 15 days to evacuate their homes and farms. Today, a lone chimney serves as a focal point for the “Burnt District” memorial.
