Tax rates in Harrisonville
Posted By J.T. on April 18, 2009
In case you’re wondering what your sales tax and property tax rates are, here is the info:
- State of Missouri (four separate levies totaling) 4.225%
- Cass County (two levies totaling) 1.250
- City of Harrisonville – General Fund
- (supports streets, fire police, etc.) 1.000
- City of Harrisonville – Parks & Stormwater .500
Total current citywide rate 6.975%
Keep in mind the voters just approved 2 sales tax increases, so as of October 1, 2009 the tax rate will be 7.350%
City of Harrisonville – Public Safety – Fire/EMS .250
City of Harrisonville – Public Safety - Police .125
7.350%
Also, many people seem unfamiliar with the Transportation Development Districts. There are 2 in Harrisonville that charge an additional 1% sales tax with a third district likely to get in on the action as well. As of right now, if you shop at the new Price chopper, Sutherlands or Russel Stover you will pay 7.975% in sales tax and as of October 1, 2009 the sales tax will be 8.350%
I will write a future article on the TDD taxes, as they seem to confuse people.
As far as property taxes, they seem fairly uniform. You should already know if your property is commercial, residential or agricultural.
Assessed property values are determined by taking the market value,as determined by the county assessor, times the assessment ratio. Assessment ratios are commercial at 32%, residential at 19%, and agricultural at 12%. Tax is paid on each $100 of assessed value.
Current Property Tax Levy for Harrisonville:
(per $100 of assessed valuation)
- R-9 School District $4.9300
- City of Harrisonville (total) .7451
- Surtax .5400
- Cass County Road & Bridge .2480
- Library .1525
- Hospital .1335
- Casco Sheltered Workshop .0381
- State of Missouri .0300
Total Levy $6.8172
So if your home is valued at $100,000 then you would be assessed at $19,000 (19% for residential).
$19000/$100 = $190
$190*$6.8172 = $1295.27 in property taxes.
I hope this clears up any questions you have on what your tax dollars are used for.
